There were two American Indian students enrolled in Big Sandy ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 33.3% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Big Sandy ISD schools welcomed 671 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 0.3% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Big Sandy ISD roughly covers schools within Upshur County and has a main office in Big Sandy.

Big Sandy High School was the only school in the district which enrolled American Indian students, welcoming two students in the 2022-23 school year.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
