Died on October 8, 2017: NFL Quarterback from Marshall
Yelberton Abraham Tittle Jr. died on October 8, 2017. He was born in Marshall, Texas, in 1926 and played football at Marshall High School. His team reached the state finals in his senior year. Tittle went on to play quarterback at LSU, where he earned All-SEC honors and MVP of the 1947 Cotton Bowl. He chose to begin his professional career with the Baltimore Colts in the AAFC. He later played for the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. Tittle set NFL records in passing yards, touchdowns, and completions. He made seven Pro Bowl appearances and won multiple Player of the Year awards. He helped lead the Giants to three straight championship games. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. His image from his final season became one of the most recognized in sports history. His early success in Marshall marked the start of a long football career.
