This week in Longview Metro history.

Born in Marshall on October 24, 1926: NFL Quarterback

Yelberton Abraham Tittle Jr. was born on October 24, 1926, in Marshall, Texas. He played high school football at Marshall High School, where his team reached the state finals. Tittle became a standout quarterback at LSU and was named MVP of the 1947 Cotton Bowl. He began his pro career with the Baltimore Colts in the AAFC and was named Rookie of the Year in 1948. He later played for the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants during a 17-year NFL career. Tittle led the league in several passing categories and made seven Pro Bowl appearances. He was the first pro football player on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Tittle set multiple league records and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. His playing style and leadership earned respect throughout the league. His early years in Marshall shaped his goals and discipline. He died on October 8, 2017
