White students comprised the most prevalent ethnic group in Gregg County schools in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 20,410 students attending Gregg County schools, 38.1% were white. Hispanic students were the second largest ethnicity, making up 32.9% of the total enrollment.

In the previous school year, white students also made up the largest ethnic group in Gregg County, comprising 38.3% of the student body.

Parkway Elementary School had the most even distribution of races among the schools in the county, which included 36% Hispanic students, 30.6% white students, 22% Black students, 9.8% multiracial students, 1% Asian students, 0.4% American Indian students, and 0.1% Pacific Islander students.

When compared to the previous school year, total public school enrollment in the county dropped 1.8%.

“As a result, many districts in our very own Central Texas region are being forced to cut back on essential programs, services, consider school closures, and adopt deficit budgets just to provide students with the education that they deserve,” Hutto ISD Trustee James Matlock said.
