There were 1,619 white students enrolled in Gilmer ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 3% more than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Gilmer ISD schools welcomed 2,825 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, white students comprised 57.3% of the student body to be one of the most represented ethnicities in the district.

Gilmer ISD roughly covers schools within Upshur County and has a main office in Gilmer.

Among the four schools in Gilmer ISD schools, Gilmer Elementary School recorded the highest enrollment of white students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of 674 students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
